Ensure That the Conflict Lies Between the Principal Forces

The protagonist must challenge the principal force of antagonism.

Sometimes, it feels safer, easier, more convenient to arrange a confrontation with a lesser, more accessible force. Sometimes it seems almost impossible to design for the protagonist to meet and deal with the most daunting obstacle. Nonetheless, almost nothing else will fit the bill.

If, in the fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk,” Jack were to climb the beanstalk, approach the castle, discover the monstrous giant, and then upon assessing the incredible size, terrible ferocity, and unmatched strength of the giant, suddenly reconsider things and slink back down the beanstalk to wrestle the scrawny individual who sold him the magic beans, the story would be diminished, as would our understanding of Jack.

There are other sundry foes that Macbeth meets as he pursues his goal of supremacy, but eventually he must confront his Macduff, just as Antigone must confront her Creon, and Blanche her Stanley, and really there is no substitute. Once you’ve introduced the giant, there’s no going back to the bean salesman.
